Fat Does Not Make You Fat

By Dr. Jamie Fettig Fat does Not Make You Fat. One of the other huge myths is that fat makes you fat. It doesnt. When you eat fat, your body has to break it down into its little building blocks and then absorb the pieces. The fat you have in your body is not the same as the fat you eat. In fact, the fat naturally found in whole foods is fat you actually need for your body to function properly. Essential Fatty Acids are the name given to the types of fat that you need to eat. This is why they are called essential. Your body cannot make them, you must eat them. And these essential fatty acids are only found with fat that naturally occurs in whole food. What are these essential fatty acids used for in your body? Well, literally everything. Every cell in your body is partly made up of these essential fatty acids. To breathe, to have your heart beat, to run, walk, think, to make hormones, to remember anything, you need essential fatty acids for all of these and basically, to live. And if you dont eat them in the food you eat, your body will not function properly. And the only place you can find essential fatty acids is in food that has naturally occurring fat in them. So if you try and cut fat out of your body, you will actually be causing harm and not really be doing anything to get rid of the fat already in your body. So what is one of the main causes of being fat. Sugar and refined carbohydrates. NO, not again with the sugar, you might be saying. Yes, Sugar and refined carbohydrates are really one of the main causes in many problems we as humans face today. You can pretend it is not true, you can believe it is not true, but no matter how you try and avoid it, sugar and refined carbohydrates will still negatively impact you whether you want them to or not. And whether or not you believe they will or not. How does sugar and refined carbohydrates make you fat? It is really simple. You have a relatively set amount of fat cells in your body. It is just a matter of how big your fat cells are. So what affects the size of your fat cells? Sugar. Because glucose is what is stored in your fat cells. And there is a little gate that controls the movement of sugar in and out of your fat cells. And the key to this little gate is insulin. Insulin is the key that opens the gates to the fat cells and allows excess glucose in the blood to go into the fat cells. So if you never eat anything that raises your blood sugar levels beyond normal, your body will not release insulin, and you will not get bigger fat cells. The body releases insulin to lower blood sugar levels that are too high. So Sugar and refined carbohydrates are actually what is one of the biggest contributing factors to why people are overweight. The ironic part of all of this, is that when you get food that has artificially been made to be low fat, you know what they usually put in when they take out the fat? Sugar. They usually add the very thing that contributes to people being fat when they are trying to make something that many people think is helping them not be fat. Fat does not make you fat. What Is Lasik?

By Kevin Stith LASIK is an acronym referring to the medical procedure of Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, which is intended to correct the vision of those who depend on glasses or contact lenses for flawless vision. It is a refractive laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists and is considered an ideal alternative to PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy. Compared to PRK, a LASIK surgery requires lesser time for recovery including the overall experience being painless. In LASIK surgery, the shape of the cornea is permanently changed using an excimer laser. A microkeratome (blade) is used for cutting a flap in the interior area of the cornea. One end of this flap is left with a hinge and is folded back to reveal the middle section of the cornea known as stroma. The flap is then replaced when the pulses of the computerized laser, vaporize a portion of the stroma. However, according to research, there may be other techniques and new terms that are related to LASIK surgery. Dr. Jose Barraquer first found the technique of LASIK. He developed the microkeratome in 1960 for cutting the thin flap of the cornea. Dr. Lucio Buratto and Dr. Ioannis Pallikaris developed LASIK surgery in 1990. A LASIK surgery is performed with the patient being full awake and mobile, however, with a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. Pre-operative screenings and comprehensive tests detecting the suitability and possible aftereffects of the surgery are performed and considered one of the crucial steps prior to the surgery. Although performed with success and ease on a number of patients, according to research, there have been cases wherein patients have developed several complications after the surgery resulting in repeated procedures of enhancement. The complications following a LASIK surgery might include night vision, double vision, glares and halos to name a few. Proper follow-up care programs are essential for some patients, without which the patient may need to continue with their glasses and contact lenses even after the surgery. It is highly recommended to find out whether the patient is eligible for a LASIK surgery and try out the alternative ways. LASIK is not recommended for people below 18 and pregnant women. If You Talk The Talk, You’ve Gotta Walk The Walk

By Shlomo Slatkin I just returned today from an incredible conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico and I would like to share with you an important lesson that I witnessed. The Imago International Conference brought together Imago Relationship Therapists from around the world to increase their competency and expertise in the practice of this modality of therapy (imago means image in Latin and is similar to the idea of beshert). As an Imago Relationship Therapist, I was very excited to learn from master therapists to hone my skills in my work with couples and families. Yet, this conference did more than teach me new techniques; it taught me about the power of humility. The moment where this teaching subtly manifested itself was during a session entitled Commitment and Promises vs. the Empathic Bond. The presenter was one of the big names in the field, holding the title master trainer. He has been involved in this work for seventeen years and he openly shared his own journey with his wife. It was not enough for couples to have good intentions, to promise to change, to say the right things; what was needed was the regular practice of dialogue to create a healing empathic bond. He talked about his own challenges in his relationship and how he still needs to engage in the discipline of dialogue with his wife in order to cultivate their connection. He then shared a touching story about his own childhood. When he was two years old living in China, he had become gravely ill. He was quarantined in the hospital as his mother traveled the streets of their town to find a serum to cure his illness. As he was in the hospital, he contracted diphtheria. The nurse noted that he was unable to breathe and she quickly brought him to the doctor who cut his throat open. He miraculously survived, yet the figurative scar of that trauma accompanied him throughout his life. After his talk, two other therapists, including Dr Harville Hendrix, author of Getting the Love you Want and founder of Imago, and another master trainer, were asked to join the presenter on stage to discuss some of the ideas presented. The other trainer began her comments by telling him how touched she was by his story and that if she would have known that side of him and his vulnerability, she would have had a lot more compassion for him over the years. She then apologized to him publicly for any hurt she had caused him (I dont know the details but imagine they have had heated debates over style and technique as they are both very different personalities). What touched me most about this presentation and exchange was the display of humility and vulnerability. It took a lot of courage for that therapist to share what he did in public. It took a lot of humility for him to admit that he was not perfect and that he was still challenged by the same issues that our couples face. We like to think that our mentors and role models are infallible. After all, they are the experts. They have written the books, they are the teachers, they have years of experiences. It was refreshing to see that they are just as human as we are and they face the same challenges we do. I believe this is an important lesson for all of us. It takes a lot of humility to admit that your marriage or your relationship with your children is not the way you would like it to be. I am not just talking about couples on the verge of divorce or families in crisis; I am talking about all of us. Our community knows better than any about the importance of action in cultivating a relationship with G-d. We are constantly engaged in mitzvos. Imagine that you could also have an amazing connection with your spouse or your kids. Would you not take action? While it makes sense that we would be afraid to acknowledge the truth, our inability to be vulnerable about ourselves and with those we love prevents us from connecting on a much deeper and meaningful level. Look at the connection between the two therapists on stage. The empathy in action, as the conference was entitled, would not have occurred if not for the genuine humility and courage that was displayed before us. So while I did learn a lot at this conference, nothing could replace the valuable lesson that I witnessed with my very eyes. In Colonial times, a grist mill was many times the first building to be set up when a new settlement was formed.
