Hollywood Mayhem Sends Muddled Message to Muslims

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Michael Bresciani I sat in a Missionary Alliance Church one Sunday morning and watched a video message about the work of missionaries in Iraq. With the mournful and distant sound of eastern chanting in the background the commentator described the work of what was up to recently the largest missionary effort in all of Iraq. It is hard to say how long such missionary endeavor will be able to survive in that region because as of early in 2006 there has been a mass exodus of Christians. Both death squads and the militia have brazenly targeted and viciously attacked Christian groups with greater frequency than at any time since the Iraq war began. Even many of the Eastern Orthodox which is indigenous to the region are seeking refuge in other countries in the middle east. News agencies are now reporting that up to forty percent of the refugees leaving Iraq are Christians. On the positive side, the missionaries said that because the Muslim religion centers so much on death that Muslims do respond favorably when they see that the Christians are genuinely loving, and that there is something noticeably different about them. One Muslim man when interviewed said When we hear the music of your life and it sounds good, then we might ask about the words to the song. On the negative side one unknown Iraqi man said something that would cut anyone to the heart. He said that it wasnt the news broadcasts that Muslims see that give them their opinions about America. He said it was the regular programming from the west that had the biggest influence on how they see us. Muslims he said, see America as a Christian nation and when they see the sex, violence, and immorality that are presented in the media like a giant circus of slop they turn away in disgust and reaffirm to themselves that if this is what Christianity is they dont want it. It is nearly impossible to explain to Muslims who are all guided by the same principles as derived from their Koran that America is a culturally diverse nation and not everyone holds Christian values. They are content to believe that when it comes to America and the west in general that, what you see is what you get. We have all heard the rants of Irans Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and we have watched the Hezbollah indiscriminately lob rockets at our allies in the Middle East, but this unknown, un-named Muslim man laid the most serious indictment upon America that we may ever hear. He specifically named Hollywood in his statement. While Americans are still debating and calling for studies about the ramifications of sex, violence and materialism on our children from the media, Muslims have already made up their minds. Without lending any credence to the sayings of Christ they are nevertheless using the truth found in them, specifically when Jesus said Ye shall know them by their fruits. (Mt 7:16) As good broadcasting codes are sent off to antiquity, movie ratings become meaningless and American parents become mere nannies who pick up after the X-Box and Nintendo generation, who can make Hollywood listen? Who can make Hollywood see? Sadly the answer to the question is understood. Even sadder is the fact that people around the world, enemy and friend see all to well. Hollywood may be having its day as it leads our collective consciousness into the night but they will have as the famous preacher Dr. R. G. Lee said, a payday someday. Rev Bresciani is the author of two Christian books one that is entirely on the second coming of Christ. He is a contributing columnist for several online news and commentary sites. Tips and Techniques For Colored Pencil Artists

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Ralph Serpe Colored pencils have become a very popular medium for budding new artists. Beginner artists using this medium find it much easier to express their creativity; mainly because of the control and convenience colored pencils offer. Other mediums like oil paint for instance, appear to present much bigger challenges for new artists. Working with colored pencil is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Let’s begin our exploration of the colored pencil medium by explaining some of the popular techniques many artists use. Hatching: Hatching is basically the drawing of closely spaced parallel lines. You can vary the length, angle and spacing of the lines to produce different effects. Cross-Hatching: First lay down strokes in a horizontal direction, and then overlap in a vertical direction, followed by a diagonal stroke. Scumbling: Using a sharp pencil move in a circular motion with light pressure, and begin to overlap the circles as you move along. This technique requires a lot of time and patience but the final result is quite rewarding. Burnishing: When you place many layers of color over another using a lot of pressure until the “tooth” of the paper is no longer able to hold pigment, resulting in a smooth surface. Do not apply too much pressure as you can break your pencil point or damage your paper. This technique works best when using a paper with a good amount of texture or “tooth”. Shading: Use the side of your pencil and use back and forth sweeping motions to cover the desired area. Vary the amount of pressure to create different effects. Colored Pencil Tips The type of paper that you choose for your colored pencil art depends on your style of drawing. Every artist is different so it really is best to experiment. Paper comes in a variety of textures, otherwise known as its “tooth”. There are rough surfaces with a lot of texture as well as smooth surfaces with very little texture. Rougher textures are better for applying multiple layers; where as smooth surfaces are excellent for blending. You should purchase a few different types of papers to determine the type of surface you are most comfortable working with. Some good choices to consider for your colored pencil drawings are Rising Stonehenge, Canson Mi Tientes, and Strathmore. When choosing your pencils, it’s best not to go for cheap pencils, because you may be disappointed with the results. Cheaper pencils do not have as much pigment and therefore will not produce the brilliance in color you are after. Many artists find the Prismacolor Colored Pencils to be a great choice. Prismacolor pencils have a soft lead that goes on smooth. When built up in layers they produce an almost paint like appearance. Wax bloom, a build up of wax on the surface of your paper, is something you will more than likely become aware of as you work with the colored pencil medium. The wax in your colored pencil can rise to the surface and form a white hazy buildup that can dull your finished piece. There are two approaches for dealing with wax bloom. One approach is to try and prevent it from happening in the first place. Spraying a workable fixative over the surface after you have finished your drawing may help. There is some concern however that fixatives may alter the colors in a drawing, so it’s best to try this on a practice drawing first. The other method is to actually wait a week or so after you complete the drawing. If you see the wax buildup, grab some soft tissue or cotton balls, and rub the surface to remove the wax. Don’t apply too much pressure as you can smear your drawing. Keep a large soft brush handy for brushing away unwanted scraps from your drawings. Artists use a number of things for this purpose, from horsehair drafting brushes, to 2″ household paint brushes. Experiment with various types of erasers to see what type you are most comfortable with. Artists use a variety of tools for removing pigment or fixing mistakes. Kneaded erasers, plastic erasers, electric erasers, and even tape may work well for you. For softening hard edges or blending, purchase some blending stumps or a colorless blender at your local art store. Try and avoid electric sharpeners as they tend to eat away too much of the pencil. Many artists keep a piece of sandpaper handy and use that to sharpen the pencil point. Never be afraid to try different things with your colored pencil art. Try various papers, pencils, etc. Look for some local colored pencil workshops in your area. You will be amazed at the amount of great information and tips you will discover from your teacher and classmates. The Healing Arts: Exploring Heart-Consciousness, Part 2; You Can Remember It

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Russ Reina In the last installment I presented just a few examples of knowledge that science has gained that indicates the heart is not only a pumping organ, but also a center for the assimilation of information. These few were chosen to allow a mental picture to help bridge the gap between concept and experience. Im well aware of the dangers of leaping to conclusions based on just a few facts. Were not allusions to heart-consciousness so much a part of all cultures, however, this information would not have the implications it does. But when you tally the list of people from all walks of life throughout all ages who have spoken about working with this seat of consciousness, and then learn that there is empirical evidence to support that your heart also conducts brain-like activity, the only thing left to do is to test it against your own experience. Spend a little time with the concepts that have been presented here. Now, find a place to relax and think/feel back to times when, instead of experiencing the moment as if looking through the windows of your eyes, you felt the seat of your consciousness to be in your chest. Can you recall times when, instead of logically working through the steps of A + B E x F = G, you simply knew (some people express it as in your gut) what direction to head, thing to do, emotion to express or answer to declare? Most of us dont have to think back any further than the last time we were in love. Do you recall how tuned-in you felt to the other person? Was this based on a linear thought process, or embrace a sequence of events that rapidly moved from sensing to feeling to interpreting to acting with hardly a moment or worry in the interim? Can you recall moments when moving in synch with that special other meant such clichs as reading her like a book, and anticipating his every need? Of course, we all know it can go deeper than this. For example, connection as a force has no spatial or time limitations. I recall a number of times when my mother, in the midst of, usually something to do with the kitchen and dinner now that I think of it, would clutch her chest and, exclaiming something like I need to call Anne! (her sister), pick up the phone only to hear Annes voice rather than a dial tone. Perhaps a more effective memory jog would be to go to a time after you spent, for example, a rapturous weekend with a lover. To what degree did you actually, consciously have to move away from that guiding feeling in your chest and, literally, back in to your brain? What did the transition back into your brain-consciousness feel like in your relation to the world? Another way of saying this is, metaphorically, how many times did you find you stopping yourself from hugging someone at the water cooler because you thought better of it? Lets go back a little further to when you were discovering this world for the first time, as a child. Can you recall, not the experience of wonder but being a part of that wonder? Can you recall a time when everything was speaking to you (and you did not hold back answering!)? Unfortunately, some of us have to go back further than others to re-connect with this way of being. Most of us, in fact, were socialized at a very early age to distrust our heartfelt impressions, disregard the things we knew in favor of things we could prove, and control our unbridled emotions rather than express ourselves as was appropriate and then move on to new realizations. Ironically enough, memories that often stand out are those where, amidst living the experience of being totally connected with the moment, there is a form of rebuke from an adult, basically communicating something like, Get down to Earth! And we do. We do get down to Earth quite quickly because the dominant culture teaches us what is acceptable and what is not. Those that dont learn these ways (and there will be more on this) are most often ostracized and punished. The reason I bring all this up is that Im here to re-mind you that at one time this way of looking at the world lived inside you, so it must be there at all times, especially now. For now, all I ask is that you allow the possibility that you have more than one center of consciousness in your body, that you are capable of accessing it again, and that you can strengthen your ability to apply it to, yes, even this practical world! The seed that Im hoping to plant is that you simply become curious about relating to the world through the consciousness of your heart and become willing to exercise the muscles that you have that help you use it along with your brain. In the next installment, Ill be talking about heart-consciousness and the indigenous way of being. I Wonder What Really Did Happen at Church Camp?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Dottiedee Glass Dottiedee here sharing, I Remember as this is my story dear to my heart, may we all find our lesson contained within the words on this page. When growing up as a child we lived on a farm in South Central Nebraska. We attended church very faithfully. Every summer they had Bible Camp for the children of the church. One I attended was 200 miles from home. To be so far away for a whole week was frightening for my first time away from home. I was 13 or 14 when we had a special girls class. The purpose of the class was to teach us how to become a Godly Woman Pleasing to God! It was taught by one of the preachers wives. We were taught the virtues of a Godly woman according to the Bible. We learned women are to be meek, quite and silent in church. We learned they are to be in sub-mission to God, the church and to their husbands. We were to be young women obeying our Daddys. We were to obey them or pay the consequences of a whipping and in the same way we were to obey our husbands as they are like our Daddys they know best. After all Jesus obeyed God even to dying on the cross, so we were to obey the authority of the church and our husbands. We learned the church authority can tell a woman how to dress, how to wear her hair, how to not wear jewels and above all to be silent in the church service as she is to learn from her husband while at home. We learned as young women that men are the rulers and women are the ruled. We learned that men make all of the big decisions. Yes, women could make decisions about taking care of the children, we didnt have to ask if we should change a dirty diaper! We learned as young women we were not on the same level or rank as the men of the church. The men make all of the church decisions and women go along with their decisions silently. Why were we taught this kind of thing, men are superior and women are inferior? Who started this kind of thinking? What has this kind of dominator/dominated relationship done for our families, our children and our society? We learned that is Gods will, we learned not to question Gods will either. But what kind of person would it take to have one part of humanity rule/dominate over the other part of society, when both were created at the same time? What if there was a magic wand we could use to switch the dominator/dominated roles declared as Gods will to the opposite sex? How would the dominator feel about now being dominated? Would they take that role with out a dominator fight against it? Why did our religions of today get started with a dominator and dominated system? Does God really expect women to be ruled by men, and if so, what do we know about our God who has determined human societies should be based on a superior/inferior, dominator/dominated, intelligent/dumb, rule/drool, master/slave, head/heart, or leader/follower system? What has it created for our society to have part of the humans controlling, ruling, lording over the rest of the humans of this society? When of the dominator/dominated systems we have in our society has created hardships which create poor financial health and blemished credit? 7 Tips for Marketing to Younger Demographics

Friday, September 7th, 2007

By Heather Loftiss The $175 billion market that teens bring to businesses is staggering. Whats even more staggering is that that number is lower than it should be. No one can measure the amount of influence teens and young adults have on their parents back pockets. Often they rely on Mom and Dad to buy the latest and greatest piece of technology out there. But they show financial independence as well; one in three high school seniors has a credit card and 63% of their income is self-generated. They are the fastest growing market in this decade as their buying power increases more and more every year. The problem is that many marketing firms are at a loss when it comes to advertising to this demographic. These younger demographics are doing new things at incredible paces. They are demanding, connected, and very aware of sales attempts. So where does a marketing agency begin? Well, advertising to this demographic is guesswork for many. But here are a few simple tips to help you get a basic grasp on the most successful methods teen marketing agencies are using today. Tip #1 Dont go traditional. Radio? No. Newspaper? No. Magazine and TV? Now youre getting warmer. You dont see kids at the bus stop reading the daily news or popping on headphones to tune to their favorite FM station. Theyre listening to satellite radio or watching reruns of their favorite TV series on iPods. Utilize mediums that the younger demographics are actually in touch with. Internet ads, cell phone marketing, even tried and true television advertising works. If you advertise in traditional mediums and expect that youre reaching young demographics enough, youre not spending your dollars wisely. Spend where it counts. Tip #2 Dont sell. Kids are very smart and they learn quickly. Sales attempts hardly work on them because theyve grown up in an age of advertising. The average American sees anywhere from 600 to 3,000 advertising messages a day. Teens most likely see the upper end of this statistic and have learned to sniff out a sales attempt before it even happens. If you try to sell them, youll lose them. Advertise your products without using double-speak, buzz words, or crazy advertising lingo. Tip #3 Parents are part of the equation. In reality, kids dont really have that much money. If theyre a younger teenager, they most likely have an allowance that theyll part with very reluctantly. If they have a job, theyll know the value of money and theyll spend wisely. So what do you do? Do what Virgin Mobile did with their cell phone campaign. They did a Parent Enlightenment campaign where they encouraged teens to educate their parents and also guilt them into buying them a cell phone. Mommy and Daddy will always buy for their kids. Target that age group where parent involvement is most excessive and use Virgins method. Tip #4 Pop culture works. Teens relate to iconic figures in popular movies, magazines, and music. Is there any question why the top designer companies get Paris Hilton to wear their latest fashions for free? She wears an outfit on a Saturday night and by Monday the items sell like crazy. Most ad budgets dont accommodate high caliber celebrities. But music works just as well. Whereas young teens like to conform to their friends interests, older teens develop their own tastes and like to be individuals. Do research and find some music that would really hit home with your target. Songs can literally make or break ads. You know an advertisement is doing its job when you see people walking down the street singing the tune in it. Tip #5 Brand, brand, brand. Just as teens relate to celebrities and popular songs, they also relate to the brands they buy. Keep your brand in front of their face. For example, the fashion industry has created a cult following for clothing stores like American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Hot Topic, Old Navy, and Express. They plaster their individual brands all over the clothing they sell. These kids are walking billboards and are proud to be walking billboards. Produce this kind of brand loyalty in teens (which is easier than producing it in adults), and youll have lifelong fans of your business. Tip #6 Utilize their network. Teens are constantly connected through email, instant messaging, cell phones, and other mobile devices. Combine their networking abilities with their passion for free things. Websites like BzzAgent.com use their agents to start wide scale word of mouth campaigns for companies. If you can set up this agent-like relationship with your teen customers, you can expect a great response. Be wary of the negative effects word of mouth advertising can have. Its easier to bash a product than praise it. And a dissatisfied customer tells 3-4 times as many people about their experience than a satisfied one. Tip #7 Hire them. The best way to market to teens and the younger demographics is to get an insiders view of the market. Pay high school students and offer internships to college students to assist your company in marketing to their demographics. Theyll have a really good time because they wont feel as if theyre in over their head, and youll be getting some very useful information. If your budget is not that big, create some focus groups of teenagers and have them analyze advertisements on TV and in popular magazines. Learn from their responses and even have them come up with their own ways to market to their demographic. Who better to market to teens than teens themselves, right? Be Prepared: Cell Phones for Emergencies

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Karen_Kirby]Karen Kirby You pull over to the side of the road. There’s smoke coming out of the hood–the car has overheated. You’re halfway between your house and your parents’ house for a visit. What’s the first thing you do after you pull over? I hope you have your cell phone on you. You’ve been there. An emergency. Something unexpected happens, and you are far from a land line. What do you? Thank goodness for cell phones. My older sister said she’d never have a cell phone. She’s not into high technology. But her daughter insisted. She bought my sister a cell phone and put her on her family’s cell phone plan. I breathed a sigh of relief. My sister and her husband have retired to the southwestern desert. If they go to visit family or go on vacation, they have to drive highways where there are miles between exits. We always worried. What if their car breaks down? What if they have a health emergency? What would they do in the heat if they had to walk to get help? There’s really no better insurance than having a cell phone. And it’s truly amazing the cell coverage that is available with many services any more. Even if you are out in “no man’s land” there is often at least some cell coverage. My sister never thought they’d actually have to use this cell phone in their travels. But on their way to my son’s graduation in California, their car over heated in the desert. They rested a while. The car seemed alright and so they ventured on. In a couple of miles, the car started smoking and came to a dead stop. They didn’t know it then, but the water hose had broken. Thank goodness they had their cell phone and could call the auto club. And then they called all of us to let us know they would be late. If they had not been able to call and didn’t arrive on time, I would have been wringing my hands and pulling my hair. But their cell phone call put all of us at ease. The auto club got out there right away and got them to the nearest repair station. The repair shop replaced the water hose and they were on their way again. They actually made to my son’s graduation on time! If you want a cell phone only for emergency purposes, plan on just using it occasionally, or if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a cell phone, consider a prepaid cell phone. I just can’t say enough about having a cell phone when you go on road trips. It’s an absolute necessity. I can’t imagine anyone going on a road trip without a cell phone! Are You Aware of the 10 Biggest Romance Myths? Relationship & Dating Advice

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

By Joshua Goh It does not matter whether you have over 25 years experience managing one or many relationships or a novice in this zone, each one of us have our own ideas of Romance. The definitions are as diverse as the person whose idea it is. Every relationship starts with romance, but somewhere in between life with its banalities come in the way. Whatever your beliefs and notions may be about Romance, I have drawn up a list which according to me are the most common myths about Romance: 1. No difference between romance and sex. Completely wrong notion. Romance can, in the least, is a precursor to sex. If a person becomes romantic, with only sex in mind, he will soon meet his Waterloo. Consider romance as a mere mental foreplay. It helps you to inform your loved one what your feelings are and that you have taken care to express your feelings. 2. Romance has no place in a relationship. Agreed, our work, hobbies and everything sometimes get higher priority than just romancing. But let us not forget that it is the romance in our lives, with our partner, that holds our lives together. It is that proverbial cementing factor which keeps our balance and keep us on track not just with the partner, but with life in general. It is truly the pivot of life. 3. You need cash to be romantic. No way. You dont have to flaunt your bank balance to be romantic. Its all about making some small wishes and dainty dreams come true. Many times, pulling up a chair, opening the door, carrying a heavy bag for your partner or just paying a compliment on how she is looking today, takes you miles ahead in a romance, which no amount of expensive gifts and dinners can achieve. 4. Romance needs extra time and more extra effort. While I agree that some aspects of romance is indeed time consuming, but a whole lot of small and insignificant things can add a lot of romance to your relationship. Simple acts like making that phone call at the most unexpected time, turning the lights low, putting on her favorite music as she enters the room or prancing in the kitchen while dinner is getting cooked, can enliven and rekindle romance in your lives. 5. Romance is a woman only topic. It is a myth that women take the lead when it comes to the mater of romancing. Both men and women can jointly hunt out romance. The only difference lies is a romantic person thinks up of various small things to add that spark, whereas an unromantic person hardly has any innovative ideas. 6. Candy and flowers are enough. Of course they work in a romantic situation but dont you think it has become very clich? Try adding something new to the old thing. Present her with flowers and candy at a place where you first met or kissed. Doing or even thinking of doing this small extra bit, takes you a long way. 7. Youre either a born romantic or you cant do it. I fully agree, you cant fake romance. However there is nothing yet discovered called the romance gene, with which guys like Richard Burton or women like Marilyn Monroe were born. You need not be born with any special talent to be romantic. If it does not occur to you naturally, you can always take tips from books, internet or even TV. And the best thing about romance is that you can spread romance. You be romantic with your partner. Chances are that your partner will definitely reciprocate. 8. Saying I love you is enough. You can say this a hundred times during the day but it still may not be enough, if you are thinking of true romance. Actions speak louder than words here. Do something to show, take a small step to prove that I love you than just saying it. Write I love you on a small Post It and stick on the bookmark of the book she will read before she goes to bed. Or write those magic words with a toothpick on a slab of butter at the breakfast table. Think and think hard. You will find many creative ways. 9. Romance needs a lot of preparation. The best part about romance is that there is no tried and tested formula which one can follow. Because the whole mater is subjective what you find romantic might be silly to another. Devise your own waysdo something that matches your capabilities, and more importantly do something which your partner finds equally romantic. If you are clueless, ask, they are glad you took interest in the subject. 10. Its more than enough to be Romantic on Valentines Day and Sweetest Day. It is expected of you to be romantic on special days like these and your anniversary, birthdays etc. But can you be romantic all year round? Can you be consistent with your romantic ideas? If you can, then you have the key to a most romantic relationship of your life time. Something where the spark is permanently on. Joshua Goh is dating & relationship expert.
